SEO, SEA and GEO compared
Three acronyms that tend to sit side by side in proposals as if they were variants of the same thing. They are not. They differ in cost, speed, durability and in what actually becomes visible.

One sentence each
SEO – search engine optimisation. Work that gets your pages high in Google’s unpaid results.
SEA – search engine advertising. You buy ad slots above the results and pay per click.
GEO – generative engine optimization. Work that gets AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to name your company in their answers, and to get it right.
The comparison
| SEO | SEA | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What becomes visible | your page in the results list | your ad above the results | your name inside an AI answer |
| First effect | after months | the same day | after weeks to months |
| Cost model | working time, ongoing | cost per click, ongoing | working time, largely one-off |
| Effect once budget stops | stays, decays slowly | stops immediately | stays until sources age |
| Control | medium | high | low |
| Measurability | good | very good | weak, still developing |
| Typical trigger | capturing steady demand | fast enquiries, tests, seasonality | clients double-checking providers |
When each one is the right call
If enquiries are missing right now, there is no way around SEA. Everything else takes too long. The price is that the enquiries stop when the budget does.
If your business lives on search demand over time – trades, medical practices, consulting, local services – SEO is the better long-run investment. Two to six months of lead time is realistic; after that the site keeps working without a cost per click.
If clients check you before deciding, GEO starts to matter. Today that mainly affects advisory-heavy and B2B offers, where someone runs a provider past a chatbot before booking a call.
The order that tends to work
Starting all three at once burns budget and leaves you unable to say what worked. A sequence is more useful:
- The basics first. A website that does a job, with clean measurement and consent sorted out. Without that, nothing you do later measures anything solid.
- Then SEA, if time is short. Ads bring enquiries and, just as importantly, data: which search terms lead to actual conversations, which wording gets clicked. That data is the foundation for the next step.
- Then SEO, built on that data. Content for the terms that have proven themselves, rather than the ones a tool suggested.
- GEO alongside SEO. The effort is manageable, because much of it belongs to good structure anyway: facts, boundaries, structured data, consistent details in directories and profiles.
Where the three overlap
They compete less than separate budget lines suggest.
Good content ranks organically and lowers your cost per click at the same time, because the landing page feeds into how the ad is rated. That same content is the material AI systems build their answers from. And the terms you pay for show you what is worth writing about.
The reverse holds too: if Google cannot find you, AI answers rarely name you. These systems search the same web. GEO without SEO is therefore not a separate route, it is an addition.
What none of them fixes
None of them repairs an unclear position. If it is not settled who an offer is for and why anyone should prefer it, all three simply show that lack of clarity to more people. Which is why on this site brand strategy comes before visibility, not the other way round.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start with SEO and skip SEA entirely?
Yes, if you can absorb the lead time. Expect months of working with nothing happening. If you have that time, you save the click costs.
Will GEO replace search engine optimisation in a few years?
Nobody can predict that seriously today. What is certain: as long as AI systems assemble answers from search results, the two are tied together. Drop SEO and you lose the basis for GEO too.
What does it cost to start?
An audit describing the current state across all three fields starts at €475. What follows depends on the findings – and sometimes the recommendation is to fix the website first.
Do you do all three?
SEO and GEO, yes. SEA I plan and steer as part of marketing and media planning, embedded in the other channels rather than as isolated campaign management.
Next step
Which of the three comes first in your case is something a conversation can settle. Thirty minutes, no obligation, no pressure to buy.
